Blackjack: The Basics

Our members have rated Blackjack, also known as “Twenty-one”, as an all-time favorite game at Casino Tropez. Here's an outline of the basic rules and some simple tips.

The objective of blackjack is to beat the dealer. If your cards total higher than the dealer's cards without going over 21 you win. You are trying to get close to 21. If your hand or the dealer's hand goes over 21 you "Bust" and automatically lose.

Cards 2 - 10 are counted at face value without regards to their suit. All face cards have a value of ten. An ace can count as either one or eleven.

Each player is dealt two cards face up. The dealer receives one card face up and one card face down, known as the hole card. Your strategy of how to play your hand based on the dealer's up card and the two cards that you were dealt. A rule of thumb for the beginner is to assume the dealer has a ten in the hole.

If you or the dealer is dealt an Ace and a ten-value card you have 21 known as a blackjack. If you have less than 21 you can choose to 'hit' (to take another card) in an attempt to get closer to 21. Once you are satisfied with your hand, you opt to 'stand'.

'Doubling down' allows to double your bet after receiving your first two cards. You can then receive one card only on your hand. Doubling down is a favorable rule to the player. You only double in favorable situations and it is to your advantage to double for the maximum.

If you are dealt a pair (two cards of the same rank) you can split these into two separate hands. You then play each hand one at a time. The dealer will give you a second card to go with the first split card. After you have decided whether to hit or stand you will move on to the next split card and the process will be repeated.

Simple, isn't it?! You are now ready to hit the blackjack tables! Good Luck!

Did You Know?...

The slang expression rolling the bones has a very literal origin. Dice used to be carved from bones. It was not at all unusual in Roman times for dice to be fashioned from sheep's knuckles. Dice have been made from wood, clay, stone, peach pits, animal horns, teeth, ivory, bronze, porcelain, even jewels. The oldest known dice with regular sides were found in northern Iraq. They're made of baked clay and date to about 3,000 B.C.

Joke of The Month

A man walks into a bar and sees three men and a dog playing poker. The dog is looking rather glum. 'That's a smart dog,' says the man. 'Not really,' replies one of the players, 'he hasn't won a single hand.' 'Why's that?' asks the man. 'He's a bit dumb,' said the player, 'Every time he gets a good hand, he wags his tail.'

What is a rebate/cash-back?

A cash-back, or rebate promotion is one that literally gives you back a part of your losses, over a given period of time.

For example, you may be offered a weekend rebate of 20% on all games. If you then wagered $100 over the weekend, and lose all of it, you will be issued a bonus of $20 (i.e. 20% of your losses). If you only lost $50, you'd get a rebate of $10.

Sometimes rebate promotions are based on games - i.e. you receive the rebate only on losses from particular games. Usually there is a minimum amount you need to wager in order to get the rebate and sometimes you will need to make a deposit in order to qualify.
